Sarah Matthias writes . . .

I wrote The Riddle of the Poisoned Monk for my four children to read to them at bedtime.  The only problem was that I could not write as fast as I could read.  Every night, my children were begging me for more.  I had to scribble away madly in the day whilst they were at school because I didn’t want to disappoint them.  Sometimes I would be sitting outside the playground gates finishing the instalment for later that night.  It was a good way to write because I received regular feedback as I went along about which characters my children liked.  If they seemed particularly excited about something in the book, I would make sure I included more about it in the next chapter.  If they seemed bored by anything, I would cut it out.  When I finally decided to find a publisher, the book was much too long.  I had to cut it down quite a bit before it appeared on the shelves of the book shops.
